I had posted earlier about my project to convert an upstairs game room into a home theater room. Well, the project has finally gotten under way.
The Problem:
The room is 17′ wide and about 15′ deep with a built-in on one wall to house a TV and storage. The room was originally intended to be a kids game room/TV room and not a home theater room. The room is completely open on one side, roughly 13′, with a pair of stairs along that entire length down to the upstairs hallway that runs parallel to the room. Also, there are bedrooms not too far away, although luckily, none directly connected or sharing a wall. But with the room open, there was no way I could crank up a movie late at night without waking the entire house.
The Solution:
To convert this room to a home theater room, we needed to build a wall to enclose the room. However, we didn’t want it to be completely closed off, so we decided to compromise a bit and put a set of 5′ double doors in the center of the opening and build the wall on either side. The doors could be open most of the time, preserving the openness of the space, but when it was time for a movie, we could shut the doors and keep most of the sound from escaping.
Construction has begun on the wall and I’ve got a few pictures of the progress to post.
